Ireland..West Coast and Lakes Country House Tour.

 

 

Day 1: Arrive Shannon International Airport and transfer to accommodation.

Stay 2 nights at Berry Lodge, Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare.

The Lodge is a recently renovated Victorian country house overlooking the sea and is a charming blend of old world style and modern comfort. Excellent accommodations and superb food enhance the peaceful atmosphere. There are five en suite bedrooms with TV, and tea/coffee making facilities. Cookery is a speciality and why not take part in two days of hands on cookery classes " a taste of real Irish cookery" as part of your holiday, if requested.

Area is ideal for golf with Lahinch and Kilkee closeby, and touring the Burren, Cliffs of Moher and Atlantic Coast. Dinner is served between 7pm-9-30pm and they have a wine licence.

Day 3: After breakfast drive north via Galway City to Connemara.

Stay 3 nights at, Quay House, Clifden, Connemara, Co. Galway.

This is Clifden’s oldest building, built circa 1820 and has been at various times the harbourmasters house, a monastery, a hotel and is now the stylishly decorated home of the Foyle family. It overlooks the harbour and has an award-winning restaurant with wine licence, dinner at 8pm. Each of the fourteen en suite bedrooms has a bath and shower. Children are welcome.

Clifden is an excellent base for exploring the lakes, mountains and magnificent Atlantic coastline of Connemara and Mayo and its Islands. There is an abundance of outdoor activities such as golf, walking, salmon fishing, horse riding, photography and painting.

Day 6: After breakfast transfer north via Sligo to Co. Donegal.

Stay 2 nights at Portnason House, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal.

Portnason is a Georgian house set in 54 acres and has private access to sand dune beach.

There are ten spacious en suite bedrooms and a real haven for writers, artists and nature lovers. The area is very good for horse riding, fishing and birdwatching, water sports and for touring the Northwest tip of Ireland. Golfers have three-championship courses closeby with superb links golf available.

Special interest groups are welcome and dinner is only available to groups but there are plenty of good local restaurants to choose from.

Day 8: After breakfast travel southeast to Co. Westmeath.

Stay 2 nights at Mornington, Multifarnham, Co. Westmeath.

Tranquillity and warm hospitality are the essence of Mornington, home to the O’Hara’s since 1858. Set in an unexplored corner of Westmeath, with its charming landscape of rolling hills, ancient forests and sparkling lakes, Mornington is truly part of the real hidden Ireland, away from the tourist hordes, yet only 60 miles from Dublin.

The original manor was built in 1710 and extended in 1896. It is now a gracious family home with a reputation for delicious meals prepared in the fine tradition of the Irish country house. Anne is a member of Euro-toques, the international fraternity of serious chefs; dinner is served at 8pm if required. There are four double rooms and one single room all with private bathrooms.

Excellent golf, fishing, and equestrian facilities can be arranged. The Neolithic sites of Newgrange and Loughcrew and the early Christian sites at Fore and Clonmacnoise are all within easy reach, as are the gardens and castles of Ballinlough, Tullynally and Butterstream.

Day 10: After breakfast transfer southwest via Limerick to Co. Clare.

Stay 1 night at Clifden House, Corofin, Co. Clare.

Clifden is a listed, early Georgian house hiding on the wooded shore of Lake Inchiquin, the southern boundary of the remarkable Burren region. Abandoned for many years, the house is slowly being coaxed into compromise with the twentieth century. The resulting mixture of gentle ruin and epicurean comfort somehow side-steps time.

There are four bedrooms all with private bathrooms. Bernadette is passionate about cooking and her organic fruits, vegetables and meats come from the garden and the nearby family farm; dinner is at 8pm if required, bring your own wine. The River Fergus flows through the stableyard and, along with a host of lakes, provides trout and pike fishing. Shooting, riding, hunting, golf, walking and the great wealth of natural history of the Burren are all on the doorstep. Shannon Airport is only 20 miles away.

Day 11: After breakfast travel back to Shannon for flight home or join another tour.

All accommodations have en suite private bathrooms.

Price is for 2 persons sharing a room and includes Breakfast.

Dinner is usually available unless otherwise stated and usually you have to book dinner by Noon for that same evening.
